Além disso, como as bacias hidrográficas da região foram historicamente antropizadas pela mineração, o presente estudo também visa avaliar uma possível associação com minas ativas e abandonadas. Foram calculados os seguintes índices: Índice de Risco Ecológico Potencial (IR), Grau de Poluição Modificado (mCd), Índice de Poluição (PI) e Índice de Poluição Modificado (MPI). As distribuições PI, MPI e RI indicam uma grande área do Quadrilátero Ferrífero com forte poluição sedimentar, especialmente nas bacias do Rio das Velhas, Rio Conceição e Rio Gualaxo do Norte.ABSTRACT: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the environmental quality and the ecological state of the stream sediments of the Iron Quadrangle through the calculation of multielementary quality indices for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Additionally, since the river basins in the region have been historically anthropized by mining, the present study also aims to assess possible association with active and abandoned mines. The following indices were calculated: Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), Modified Pollution Degree (mCd), Pollution Index (PI), and Modified Pollution Index (MPI).
