- Exposure to ionizing radiation and dangerous substances inside buildings related to construction productsPublication . Carvalho, F.P.; Paiva, J.V.; Carvalho, Jorge; Batista, Maria JoaoABSTRACT: The use of many materials of geological origin and recycled materials in the construction of buildings faces an increasing demand and stricter regulation for quality control. Construction products are requested to meet safety standards including those for radon exhalation and gamma radiation emission, amongst other dangerous substances, because if unchecked they could deteriorate the quality and safety of the indoor environment. Construction products shall pass testing for radioactivity in order to meet those standards and to maintain a high ranking position in the international markets.
- The materials of historical monuments: characterisation of the mortars of the Roman aqueduct of Zaghouan-CarthagePublication . Carvalho, Fernanda; Lima, Maria Margarida Rolim Augusto; Silva, Teresa; Veiga, João PedroABSTRACT: The Zaghouan-Carthage Roman aqueduct was the largest built by the Roman Empire at the time, and its archaeological remains bear witness to the excellence of Roman construction. Its importance over the centuries makes it a unique case study for characterising the different types of mortar used. This work aims to study these materials, considering their functions, especially as structural elements or as render, to relate the chemical and mineralogical characteristics observed to both the function and historical context of the monument. Using a multi-analytical approach, the preservation of samples was prioritised whenever possible. The results indicate that mortars with a structural function have higher silicon contents than those used as render. In the case of water conduit coatings, the mortars were formulated with ground ceramics to develop hydraulic properties and ensure the waterproofing material. However, it was not possible to identify a characteristic pattern related to the historical construction periods.
- Use of mining wastes for high-tech thermoelectric applications : The case of START project in Iberian Pyrite Belt [Resumo]Publication . Morais, Igor; de Oliveira, Daniel Pipa Soares; Silva, Teresa; Albardeiro, Luís; Salgueiro, Rute; Neves, FilipeABSTRACT: Europe aims to become the first climate neutral continent by 2050, which means rapidly implementing a green transition to which the European Union (EU) is strongly committed through the European Green Deal. This green transition leverages unprecedented pressure on the intensive use of mineral resources. In this context the START project “Sustainable Energy Harvesting Systems Based on Innovative Mine Waste Recycling” emerged with the objective to use mining waste as a source of raw materials for the development of advanced energy conversion devices. Thermoelectric materials (TE) are functional materials that can directly convert thermal energy into electricity.
