consumido.
As
amostras estudadas apresentam pequena variabilidade granulomƩtrica e os
seguintes minerais leves: quartzo hialino, quartzo leitoso, feldspato e partĆculas mistas de quartzo e feldspato. O principal mineral argiloso Ć© a esmectite.
Abstract: Although feldspar is one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth's crust, and may occur in many geological environments, only a small number of deposits are suitable for exploitation. Quality feldspar resources are scarce in Portugal and about 40% of the consumed feldspar is imported. With the present work we intend to study the feldspathic sands of Casal do Frade deposit (Pombeiro da Beira, municipality of Arganil). The studied samples present small particle size variation with the following light minerals: quartz, feldspar and mixed particles of quartz and feldspar. The main clay mineral identified is smectite. The heavy mineral content is very small (0.037%) and the main dense minerals are tourmaline and ilmenite. Both the quartz and feldspar analyzed do not exhibit the presence of iron oxides, which suggests that it is of adequate quality to be used as a feldspar quartz sand for the ceramic and glass industries.
