- SENTINEL 2 and radiometric data as geological and mineral exploration characterization tools in southern PortugalPublication . Quental, Lídia; Batista, Maria Joao; de Oliveira, Daniel Pipa Soares; Matos, João Xavier; Dias, Ruben Pereira; Gonçalves, PedroABSTRACT: To maximize geological and mineral exploration know-how, the LNEG gathered spectral information of distinct sources and wavelengths in southern Portugal: a) MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) and b) Total Gamma-ray. In a), MSI from Sentinel 2 mission of the Copernicus European Programme for Earth Observation provides spectral information in the wavelength range 430-2320 nm. The dataset was atmospherically corrected (level 1-C), resampled to 10 m pixel size, and merged data capture on July 2016 and September 2017 over southern Portugal. The images are processed in ENVI software to enhance geological and mineral exploration characteristics, using standard algorithms to extract information based on compression factors, i.e. Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF), Independent Component Analysis (ICA), as well as spectral similarity measures, and spectral indices of clay, ferrous minerals and iron oxides and silica. In b), total gammaray data gathered through decades of multitemporal acquisition with portable SPP2 scintillometers, land and airborne surveys, depicts the radiometric measurements in total count expressed in rate of exposition of U, Th and K in a radiometric map at 1:500 000 scale.
- AGEO : Natural hazard prevention and awareness raising through citizen observatoriesPublication . Rodriguez, Ariadna Ortega; Gomes, Rui Carrilho; Jeremias, Filipe Telmo; Cerezal, Juan Carlos Santamarta; Quental, Lídia; Jiménez, Inés Galindo; Correia, Vitor; Pinto, Cláudia Narciso; Le Dantec, Nicolas; Gouveia, Fátima; Lemon, Kirstin; Hénaff, Alain; O’Hare, GregoryABSTRACT:The Platform for Atlantic Geohazard Risk Management (AGEO) is a new project co-financed under the Interreg Programme for the Atlantic Area which aims to launch five Citizens’ Observatory pilots on geohazards according to regional priorities.
- Landslides monitoring techniques review in the Geological Surveys of EuropePublication . Auflič, Mateja Jemec; Herrera, Gerardo; Mateos, Rosa María; Poyiadji, Eleftheria; Quental, Lídia; Severine, Bernardie; Peternel, Tina; Podolszki, Laszlo; Iadanza, Carla; Kociu, Arben; Warmuz, Bartłomiej; Jelének, Jan; Hadjicharalambous, Kleopas; Becher, Gustaf Peterson; Dashwood, Claire; Liščák, Pavel; Minkevičius, Vytautas; Todorović, Saša; Møller, Jens JørgenABSTRACT: Landsliding is the downslope movement of surface material under the force of gravity, initiated when gravitational and other types of shear stresses within the slope exceed the shear strength of the material that forms the slope. Often, landslides pose a physical and environmental threat to communities living in landslide-prone areas. While much landslide research focuses on monitoring techniques to define the background of the landslide (extent, volume, velocity, magnitude) one of the main goals of the Geological Surveys (GS) are to support and understand the regional and local geology to identify areas susceptible to landslides.

- Visualizadores 3D e de observação da Terra como fonte de promoção e expansão do conhecimento geológicoPublication . Quental, Lídia; Patinha, Pedro; Gonçalves, Pedro; Pereira, AureteSUMMARY: The 3D and Earth observation viewers within geoportal of Energy and Geology provide the access to multisource data to support and enhance geological knowledge. These platforms expose new data and allow several new functionalities for improved interaction tailored to the stakeholders needs. These include the height component, remote sensing indices, spectral profiles and comparison with standard materials, multitemporal analysis and change detection, for a fast overview of geological characterization and updated evolution. The overall result allows a better understanding of the Earth´s surface and subsurface combining remote sensing data, geology, and landforms, thus promoting and expanding geological knowledge.
- Desenvolvimento e implementação do modelo de dados da Carta Geológica Digital de PortugalPublication . Pereira, Aurete; Patinha, Pedro; Francés, Alain Pascal; Dias, Ruben Pereira; Rodrigues, José Feliciano; Quental, LídiaSUMMARY: The Portuguese Geological Survey (LNEG) provides the Geological Digital Map of Portugal (online version) through its geoportal. This product is supported by a data model (DM) that implements a hierarchical catalog of lithostratigraphic and lithodemic units. The DM is linked to an INSPIRE compliant geodatabase. The developed geological model provides a synthesis of published maps, with ongoing steps toward harmonisation and interoperability. This paper describes several aspects of the database implementation and its characteristics. The obtained database will allow to: (i) produce a seamless 2D geological map; (ii) solve the inconsistencies that become visible when changing the scale of representation (from 1:25 000 to 1:200 000); (iii) fulfill the INSPIRE requirements. It also highlights some cartographic problems that require further research and field survey to be solved.
- Role of Geological Surveys of Europe in landslide monitoringPublication . Auflič, Mateja Jemec; Herrera, Gerardo; Mateos, Rosa María; Poyiadji, Eleftheria; Quental, Lídia; Severine, Bernardie; Peternel, Tina; Podolszki, Laszlo; Calcaterra, Stefano; Kociu, Arben; Warmuz, Bartłomiej; Jelének, Jan; Hadjicharalambous, Kleopas; Becher, Gustaf Peterson; Dashwood, Claire; Ondrus, Peter; Minkevičius, Vytautas; Todorović, Saša; Møller, Jens Jørgen; Marturia, JordiABSTRACT: This work was developed by the Earth Observation and Geohazards Expert Group from EGS and provides an overview of landslide monitoring techniques from 2005 to 2021. Based on the questionnaire, the following objectives were set: (1) to identify the type of monitored landslides, (2) to identify the landslide monitoring techniques, (3) to identify the spatial resolution, temporal resolution, and status of the technique (operational, non-operational), time of using (before the event, during the event, after the event), and applicability of the technique to the early warning system.
