- Microalgae in a global world: New solutions for old problems?Publication . The consumption of fossil fuels is an example, with increasing levels of exploitation and negative impacts caused by their use. Anthropogenic activities have triggered the over accumulation of many hazardous substances and wastes which are regarded to be detrimental to life in the Earth and to the various planet ecosystems. There is an urgent need to restore natural resources and unwanted residues and wastes to levels prior the demographic explosion. Microalgal biotechnology appears to be pivotal to achieve this goal in a near future to come. This review presents the current resource problems affecting the Earth and how microalgae are expected to be an important part of the solution, discussing how the production of renewable energy from microalgae can help in an integrated way to mitigate different environmental problems. Microalgae are able to convert wastewaters, CO2 and organic residues in marketable biomass for different uses, including biofuels, converting waste in value. An inventory of current microalgal-based biorefineries in operation as well as a directory of companies, products and applications are also presented.
- Model predictive control for microgrid functionalities: review and future challengesPublication . While these technologies have reached their technological maturity, the way they are integrated and operated in the future smart grids still presents several challenges. Microgrids appear as a key technology to pave the path towards the integration and optimized operation in smart grids. However, the optimization of microgrids considered as a set of subsystems introduces a high degree of complexity in the associated control problem. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a control methodology which has been satisfactorily applied to solve complex control problems in the industry and also currently it is widely researched and adopted in the research community. This paper reviews the application of MPC to microgrids from the point of view of their main functionalities, describing the design methodology and the main current advances. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of MPC and its applications in microgrids are described and summarized.
- The role of microalgae in the bioeconomyPublication . Acien, Gabriel; Reis, Alberto; Wijffels, René H.; Barbosa, Maria; Verdelho, Vitor; Llamas, BernardoABSTRACT: The bioeconomy is a new and essential paradigm for reducing our dependence on natural resources and responding to the environmental threats that the Earth is currently facing. In this regard, microalgae offer almost unlimited possibilities for developing a modern bioeconomy given their metabolic flexibility and high biomass output rates, even when produced under harsh conditions, such as when treating wastewaters or using flue gases. In this article, the microalgal contribution to important economic activities such as the production of food and feed, cosmetics and health-related compounds is reviewed. Moreover, potential contributions of microalgae to emerging sectors are discussed, as in the production of biomaterials, agriculture-related products, biofuels and provision of services such as wastewater treatment and the clean-up of industrial gases. The different microalgal production technologies have also been analyzed to identify the main bottlenecks affecting microalgal use in different applications. Finally, the major challenges facing microalgal biotechnology in enlarging its contribution to the bioeconomy are evaluated, and future trends discussed.
- Geophysical investigation of the down-dip extension of the Lombador massive sulphide deposit, Neves-Corvo, PortugalPublication . Dias, Pedro; Thunehed, Hans; Represas, Patricia; Carvalho, João; Inverno, Carlos; Spicer, Bill; Ramalho, Elsa; Donoso, George; Araújo, Vítor; Marques, Fábio; Morais, Igor; MALEHMIR, Alireza; Pacheco, NelsonABSTRACT: The 150 Mt Lombador massive sulphide deposit is one of the seven known deposits of the Neves-Corvo mine. The deposit dips approximately 30º–35º to the NE and is open down dip, with current exploitation reaching down at 1 km depth. To investigate the possible downwards continuation of the deposit, a 1D constrained inversion of time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) ground loop data was conducted, followed by 3D electromagnetic (EM) forward modeling and a constrained 3D gravimetric inversion over the same area. To perform the EM and gravity modeling/inversion, a 3D geologic model was built using a density database comprising of approximately 300 drill-holes, and an electrical conductivity database with measurements from resistivity surveys and 1D inversion of the TEM data. The EM modeling shows that the Neves Forma tion shales are a regional conductive layer extending down to approximately 1.6 km depth in the Lombador area. This layer, often topped by massive sulphides, has an average density of 2.83 g/cm3 , whereas stockwork and massive sulphide reach on average 3.1 g/cm3 and 4.5 g/cm3 , respectively. The 3D constrained gravity inversion results do not support the hypothesis of the presence of massive sulphides located in the down-dip direction of the Lombador deposit in the immediate vicinity of the known deposit. The lack of spatial resolution of the gravity grid, the study area limited size and the lack of information from within the basement suggest further studies are required to confrm the presence and amount of stockwork mineraliza tion down-dip the Lombador deposit inside the Neves-Formation or the Phyllite-Quartzite basement.

Carbon-neutral energy supply is based on raw materials from which energy-critical elements for rechargeable batteries like cobalt, graphite, lithium and rare earth elements can be purified. In addition to direct energy generation, other future-oriented, environmentally friendly key technologies needed for digitisation and mobility can only be engineered by using raw materials (European Commission 2019).
- The effects of the Jenkyns Event on the radiation of Early Jurassic dinoflagellate cystsPublication . Correia, Vânia; Riding, James; Duarte, L. V.; Fernandes, Paulo; Pereira, ZéliaABSTRACT: This contribution is an overview of the Early Jurassic dinoflagellate cysts of the Lusitanian Basin in Portugal, with particular emphasis on the effects of the Jenkyns Event (Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event) on the evolution of this planktonic group. We review and discuss data from 214 samples from six Lower Jurassic successions (upper Sinemurian to upper Toarcian) in the Lusitanian Basin. The late Pliensbachian radiation of dinoflagellate cysts was well recognized in this basin. The pre-Jenkyns Event interval is highly productive, with maximum abundance and species richness values. However, this palaeoenvironmental perturbation severely affected the evolution of this group for the remainder of the Early Jurassic. The prolonged recovery of the dinoflagellates in the Toarcian following the Jenkyns Event is not typical of the northern regions (Arctic and Boreal realms), where new species began to evolve earlier compared with southern European basins.
- Synthesis of novel pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline-bisphosphonic acids and an unexpected intramolecular cyclization and phosphonylation reactionPublication . S.ABSTRACT: Novel pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline alpha-ketophosphonic and hydroxymethylenebisphosphonic acid compounds were synthesized using different methodologies, starting from 2-chloro-3-formylquinoline 1. New phosphonic acid compounds were obtained as N-1 derivatives with a side chain with 1 or 3 (n = 1 or 3) methylene groups. All phosphonic acid compounds and their corresponding ester and carboxylic acid precursors were fully characterized, and their structures elucidated by spectroscopic data, using NMR techniques and infrared and high-resolution mass spectroscopy. During the process to obtain the N-1 substituted derivative with two methylene groups (n = 2) in the side chain, an unexpected addition-cyclization cascade reaction was observed, involving the phosphonylation of an aromatic ring and the formation of a new six-member lactam ring to afford a tetracyclic ring system. This was an unexpected result since other pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline derivatives and all corresponding pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine derivatives already prepared, under similar experimental conditions, did not undergo this reaction. This domino reaction occurs with different phosphite reagents but only affords the six-member ring. The spectroscopic data allowed the identification of the new synthesized tetracyclic compounds and the X-ray diffraction data of compound 11 enabled the confirmation of the proposed structures.
