ABSTRACT: Much has been written and much remains to be written about coal in Brazil. The article addresses episodes less considered in historiography, inserted in specific conjunctural moments and presented with an explanatory character of political actions and not as a linear chronological sequence from the 19th century to the 1970s. There are three central episodes: coal in the articles 'As Riquezas Minerais no Brasil' published in the newspaper O Auxiliador da Indústria Nacional (1850-1858); the research of the Geological and Mineralogical Survey of Brazil - SGMB, systematized in the '1st Brazilian Coal Congress', in 1922; and coal as part of major projects such as REMAC – Global Reconnaissance of the Brazilian Continental Margin, in the 1970s. Marked by continuities and discontinuities of policies, interests and resources at different conjunctures, the considerations on these episodes seek to contribute to a new episode to be written about the environmental implications of coal mining in the country.
