- Integration of renewable energy systems in buildings in the line of sustainable construction and energetic efficiencyPublication . Marujo, R.; Simões, Teresa; Estanqueiro, AnaBeing Portugal an extremely active country on the renewable energy area, one of technology niches experiencing a growing interest from investors and population in general are domestic micro-generation systems, especially when integrated in a building’s architecture. As a response to the expectations developed among domestic end-users of distributed renewablebased micro-generation systems, by the end of 2007, the Portuguese government published new legislation to regulate and clarify terms and tariffs for the installation of these small systems. To fulfill the needs of these users - essentially domestic and small and medium companies - INETI initiated the development of tools to characterize the wind resource in urban areas, the wind technological solutions adapted to urban environment – e.g. T.Urban small wind turbine - and tools to assess the viability of the micro-generation systems installation in buildings. This work presents and analyses scenarios for building energetic sustainability, by using a wind (SWT) system, a photovoltaic (PV) system and sizing a hybrid system (SWT+ PV) in a domestic building. Economic and energetic issues of the new legislation are presented and discussed. The results obtained demonstrate that it is very advantageous to become a microproducer in Portugal, if the region of interest is suitable for wind energy exploitation.

- Two-step processing of hydrogen storage FeTi Alloys: influence on reaction temperaturePublication . Rangel, C. M.; Livramento, Vanessa; Correia, J.B.; Shohoji, NobumitsuIn the present work, nanostructured FeTi powders were produced by mechanical alloying, avoiding the unfavorable agglomeration problem by using a low energy milling (e.g. 300 rpm) of pure metallic constituents, Fe and Ti, followed by subsequent heat treatment at 800ºC. A major achievement of this research was to show that by modulating the milling intensity and total milling time, the high temperature synthesis reaction of FeTi (1100ºC) can be partially or totally suppressed, reverting instead to a metastable reaction path at low temperature (650ºC). The mechanical “activation” modifies the reactivity of the system, producing a very thin Ti /Fe layers. That in conjunction with a high level of defects induced mechanically may be responsible for the metastability.
- Simulating antigenic drift and shift in influenza APublication . Fachada, Nuno; Lopes, Vitor V.; Rosa, AgostinhoComputational models of the immune system and pathogenic agents have several applications, such as theory testing and validation, or as a complement to first stages of drug trials. One possible application is the prediction of the lethality of new Influenza A strains, which are constantly created due to antigenic drift and shift. Here, we present an agent-based model of immune-influenza A dynamics, with focus on low level molecular antigen-antibody interactions, in order to study antigenic drift and shift events, and analyze the virulence of emergent strains. At this stage of the investigation, results are presented and discussed from a qualitative point of view against recent and generally recognized immunology and influenza literature.
