- Evaluation of occupational exposure to flour dust and additives in a milling industryPublication . Matos, Maria Luísa; Cardoso, Ricardo TeixeiraABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess an environmental risk in a workstation: the occupational exposure of workers to flour dust, and mixtures of flour dust with additives in the cereal milling industry. The purpose was to understand how exposure to flour dust, and mixtures of flour dust with additives affects the health of workers. In the facilities of the milling company where this study was carried out, there is an area where workers are particularly exposed to flour dust and mixtures of flour dust with additives involved. Therefore, one of the main objectives of this study was to evaluate if these workers were subjected to occupational health hazards during their working hours, due to the contact with suspended flour dust in their workstations, focusing special attention to this area, whenever possible. A sampling of particles suspended in the air was carried out, in order to perform a quantitative analysis. Suction pumps were used, placed on workers, who work in three different workstations, to make a quantitative comparison. An average concentration (a.c.) of 17.27 mg/m3 was obtained in the workstation of the preparation of mixtures, an a. c. of 1.35 mg/m3 and one of 2.25 mg/m3 in the bagging workstation – for plain flour and for added flour, respectively. It was found that all values obtained exceed the Exposure Limit Value proposed by the Standard NP 1796:2014, which presents a value calculated as a weighted average of 0.5 mg/m3. Mitigation with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), FFP3 type masks, is enough to protect workers.
- Noise-Induced fatigue in maritime work environments: A cross-sectional study of occupational exposure among seafaring personnel in IndonesiaPublication . Febriyanto, Kresna; Mourão, Luis; Matos, Maria Luísa; Guedes, JoanaABSTRACT: Objective: The study aims to examine the relationship between occupational noise exposure and the levels of physical, mental, and emotional fatigue among speedboat crew members.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among speedboat crew members in Tarakan, North Kalimantan, Indonesia on November 2024. This study involves two categories of ship personnel as samples, namely, crew members and captains were 87 crews were enrolled in this study. We calculated using Spearman's rho models to analysed the data.Results: The study found that occupational noise levels on speedboats ranged from 77.9 to 100.9 dB(A), with one vessel exceeding the safe exposure threshold. The level of fatigue among the respondents is mostly in the low category (69% - 74.7%). Occupational noise aboard speedboats is a significant contributor to physical (r = .715, p = .040) and mental fatigue (r = .839, p = .022).Conclusion: The results of the statistical test indicate that, besides the main research variable, other confounding variables correlate with the fatigue levels of the crew, such as age, educational background, and working period. While overall fatigue levels were low, the study highlights the need to address noise exposure and other correlated factors to safeguard seafarers well-being.

Pereira, Zélia; Quental, Lídia; Jorge, Micael; Teixeira, Rui; Patinha, Pedro; Xavier Matos, João Manuel; Mesquita Soares, Sofia; Silva Mendes, Márcia Cristina; Pereira, Aurete; de Oliveira, Daniel Pipa Soares; Matos, Maria Luísa; Carvalho, Cristina Isabel Paulo; Dias, RubenRESUMO: O arquivo histórico do Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG) constitui um acervo científico com quase 180 anos de atividade geológica e mineira, representando um banco de dados excecional e um repositório geológico nacional. Entre as áreas de missão do LNEG destaca-se a preservação, tratamento e disponibilização deste património único. Esta coleção é considerada património científico nacional, com relevância histórica e importância fundamental para a investigação estratégica do país, além de possuir elevado valor económico. Contudo, torna-se necessário que as coleções existentes sejam devidamente organizadas e disponibilizadas online através da plataforma GEOPORTAL do LNEG. Para alcançar este objetivo é, pois, necessário criar e desenvolver um centro de dados digital que facilite e promova a consulta da informação existente. Uma das coleções que requer organização urgente é a coleção de lâminas delgadas e superfícies polidas, composta por milhares de espécimes conservados no LNEG. Esta coleção resulta de inúmeros estudos petrográficos realizados ao longo de décadas sobre rochas, minérios e fósseis, abrangendo o território nacional e os antigos territórios ultramarinos (atualmente países da CPLP). As lâminas delgadas e superfícies polidas são fundamentais para a caracterização das rochas, constituindo um valioso suporte para diversas áreas da missão científica.

Pereira, Zélia; Quental, Lídia; Jorge, Micael; Teixeira, Rui; Patinha, Pedro; Xavier Matos, João Manuel; Mesquita Soares, Sofia; Silva Mendes, Márcia Cristina; Pereira, Aurete; de Oliveira, Daniel Pipa Soares; Matos, Maria Luísa; Carvalho, Cristina Isabel Paulo; Dias, RubenABSTRACT: The historical archive of the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG) encompasses nearly 180 years of geological and mining activity, constituting an exceptional scientific repository and a national geological treasure. Among LNEG’s core missions is the preservation, processing, and dissemination of this unique heritage. The collection is recognised as part of the national scientific heritage, holding both historical and strategic importance for research and possessing considerable economic value. However, the existing collections must be properly organized and digitized to ensure their online accessibility through the LNEG GEOPORTAL platform. Achieving this goal requires the creation and development of a digital data centre that will facilitate and promote the consultation of the existing information. One of the archives in greatest need of urgent organization is the collection of rock thin sections and polished surfaces, which includes thousands of specimens preserved at LNEG. These materials are the result of decades of petrographic studies of rocks, fossils, and ores conducted across Portugal and its former overseas territories (now CPLP countries). The slides and polished surfaces are essential for rock characterisation, and their petrographic analysis provides invaluable support across multiple LNEG mission areas.
