ABSTRACT: The growing industrialization associated with mining expansion is responsible for the pollution of environmental reservoirs, among which Pb stands out due to its neurotoxic character. In the Iron Quadrangle, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Pb occurs mainly associated with Fe, which has a wide distribution and high concentrations in the region. In this context, a regional study carried out involved the collection and analysis of 541 samples of surface water and stream sediments in stretches of third-order basins throughout the entire area. Pb concentrations in stream sediments ranged from 1 to 107 mg.kg-1, with a reference value of 59 mg.kg-1 based on the boxplot Upper Inner Fence (UIF) methodology. In surface waters, Pb had a median value of 8.3 μg.L-1, considerably higher than that observed in Europe. Most of the anomalies found are associated with certain lithological types (phyllites and itabirites) and sites impacted by mining.
