SUMMARY: The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) is one of the largest metallogenic provinces of Volcanogenic
Massive Sulfide (VMS) deposits in the world. On top of the massive sulfide mineralizations, exhalite levels
are usually formed by jasper, chert and carbonates, related to Fe-Mn-Ba mineralizations. The structure of Maralhas, at the Aljustrel VMS deposit, was studied and the following mineral phases were identified: magnetite, hematite, goethite, pyrolusite and psilomelane. Chemical analyses were performed to complement and validate the mineralogy identified by optical microscopy inspection.
